Marcia Cochran
Artist Statement 2023

I feel fortunate to have spent my adult life making pottery. The opportunity to explore forms and glazes has kept me excited and eager to continue working. As a potter, I hope the pottery I make performs well, feels good in the hand, engages the eye, and connects the user to our natural world.

I think I’ve been most influenced in the making of pottery by my mother and father who were raised on large farms where they grew their own food and made many of the items they used in daily living. They passed on to me their deep respect for the functional handmade object.

To make my pottery, I use the potter’s wheel, a slab roller and and extruder. I use a white stoneware clay. All my work is fired to Cone 6 in an electric kiln and is food, dishwasher, oven and microwave safe.

🔅 Come see Marcia’s work alongside many other this Friday in Gallery 400B at the Pendleton Art Center from 5-9pm! 🔅

Mel Gaskins
Ceramic Artist | Art + Design Teacher | Designer | Traveler

I have been teaching Architecture and Ceramics for the past 30 years. I received my MFA, in Ceramics from University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, my BFA, in Ceramics and my BAS in Art Education for Kent State University. I have participated in Artist-in-Resident program at The University of The Arts, and The Archie Bray Foundation, and taught printmaking in Cookstown Australia. My decorative pots reflect my cheeky-ness as I play with polka dots, leopard prints, chickens or landing paper airplanes as surfaces. My sculptural work reflects my love of the variety of flora, fauna and coral or our wonderful world from both above ground and under the sea.

🔅 Come see Mel’s work alongside many others at our Clay Alliance Gallery 400B! We are open this Friday from 5-9pm at Pendleton Art Center for Final Friday!! 🔅

Bio from Ryan Durbin

Hi, my name is Ryan Durbin. I am the owner and maker for RD Ceramics. I began my exploration into creating functional pottery in 2007 during high school in Louisville, KY. I am a full-time website developer in the Cincinnati, Ohio area, but always have enjoyed focusing on creating practical & functional artwork in my spare time.

I have continued to improve and experiment within the clay medium ever since my start in 2007 by learning at various local clay studios and studying ceramics at Northern Kentucky University as an undergrad. After learning and experimenting with various techniques in hand-building, wheel-throwing, and firing methods from multiple mentors, I decided it was time to start selling my artwork in 2015 so others can enjoy and appreciate these unique pieces for years to come.

My work is designed to be simple, lightweight, comfortable, and appealing to the eye with my various selection of colorful glazes. I enjoy making everyday dishes, such as mugs, cups, bowls, oil bottles, and spoon rests. My pottery is primarily wheel-thrown, created with white or speckled stoneware clay, and is all food, dishwasher, & microwave safe. I fire my work in an electric kiln to cone 6 (around 2232 degrees Fahrenheit) in an oxidation atmosphere. I also co-host a podcast with my friend Becca Otis called Wheel Talk where we discuss life as a potter, small business owner, and interview other creative peers who are also growing their small businesses.

She also enjoys the molding making process and has been creating molds (press and 1-5 part molds) to have more fun with series and surface decorating. In her work and demeanor you will find a balance between down-to-earth and quirky whimsy.

The natural world, insects, and the organization of their communities inform and inspire the process of Linnea Campbell's work. The organic life around us is a direct source of relation back to our lives. The most microscopic organic life is also what essentially allows us to exist and sustain our own lives. Linnea’s work consists of one of a kind ceramic wares, using wheel throwing and hand building methods that she embellishes with her illustrations of predominantly Midwestern forest creatures: from microbes in the soil to insects and small mammals. Her work aims to shed light on these tiny creatures and the large impact they have on our world.

When I retired from the corporate world, my life went a whole different direction. I gave up city life and moved to the quiet countryside. My house (near Rabbit Hash, KY) looks out at the Ohio River. The serenity has allowed my creative side to blossom and I became a potter. I love playing in clay and my inner child is very happy.
