🔅 Gallery Member Spotlight 🔅

Nick Bonner is our fearless leader of the gallery at the Pendleton. Outside of his role as gallery director, designer and pedestal maker, he is a senior foundations lecturer at Northern Kentucky University (and has been for over 20 years!). He has two veins of work. The first includes functional, celadon or copper red glazed porcelain fired to ∆ 10. The second vein includes work that is more decorative and sculptural. It is ∆ 04 low fire red clay with a turquoise glaze that is all formulated by Nick. You can find Nick at almost every Final Friday waiting to chat about all things clay.

Artist’s Statement from Dick Overman

I’ve been making pottery since 1972 in Cincinnati. My initial education was a class in throwing on a kick wheel. I then worked with Bob Hasselle at Clifton Earthworks in Cincinnati and attended pottery workshops.

My work is hand thrown on a potter’s wheel with sculpted whimsical additions, using high fired stoneware clay. The pieces are finished using glazes, which I formulated, and fired in an electric kiln to cone 7.

In 1973 I started showing at Art Fairs and various Art Galleries, which I continue today.

Our wonderful gallery members! Out of about 150 Clay Alliance members, there are 25 of us that are gallery members as well (over half of us made it into the photo!) We come from all over the Greater Cincinnati region - from Dearborn, IN, to Yellow Springs, OH, to Melbourne, KY, and more.

If you follow us on social media it’s likely that you’ve seen us at the Spring Pottery Fair (coming up May 6th), at our annual Empty Bowls the first Sunday in November, or at our Holiday Fair in December. We love our patrons who support us at any and all of our events! Throughout everything we do our mission is to elevate the presence of clay in our community. The gallery is one way we can do that throughout the whole year.

As you may or may not know, clay as a material is very therapeutic. It brings healing, enlivens our muscle memory, and brings about community. Clay people are good fun loving people, which I’m sure many of you can attest to. We love sharing our art and our craft with YOU! We have lots of exciting things in store for our gallery. Let me tell you, we’ve got good energy in this space.

🔅Gallery Member Spotlight 🔅

Marie Hamaker fell in love with pottery in high school, but took a break until she met her now husband, Joshua, in 2004. As luck would have it, he had a full pottery studio in his home. Pottery has been Marie’s passion since then. Marie has developed a unique and colorful style of functional stoneware and ceramic sculpture influenced by the rainbow of nature. Marie prefers to work in stoneware, but loves to fire using a variety of techniques including pit, wood, electric, and raku. Inspired by her local love of Cincinnati, many of the animals at the Cincinnati Zoo appear in her work.

Drake Ash makes functional stoneware pottery and whimsical miniatures in her East Walnut Hills studio. Drake, who recently retired from a career as a violinist with the Cincinnati Symphony, looks forward to spending more time indulging her clay habit. "I enjoy the sense of community with other potters here in town. There is lots to learn from each other, and many extremely fine artists to look up to.It's great fun to see people enjoy my work."

🔅Gallery Member Spotlight 🔅

Trish McLennan of Gardenhouse Pottery starts with wheel thrown as well as hand built functional kitchenware using a beautiful red clay from North Carolina. Each piece is partially covered in a white slip to create a canvas for the surface design. Before any piece is started, she prepares silkscreen illustrations to use decorate the work. She uses the library of patterns to create a patchwork of design that is fired into the clay before additional iron oxide designs and quotes are added and fired on.
